Costa Brava to Girona Train Station: AVE Departure, Luggage and Driver Handoff Planning

A Costa Brava to Girona train station transfer is a departure with a deadline, not just a drive inland. When an AVE or other reserved train is part of an onward international itinerary, the useful plan works backward from the exact train, its operator and the station's boarding requirements. A private vehicle can simplify the coastal pickup; it cannot eliminate check-in, security screening where applicable, or a late guest's risk of missing departure.

Set the station handoff time first. Then establish when the entire party, luggage and any child equipment will actually be ready at the villa or hotel. The distance from Begur, Llafranc or Cadaqués is only one part of that equation.

Which Girona station is on your ticket?

Verify the station printed on the ticket before booking transport. Girona railway station is listed by infrastructure operator Adif at Plaça d'Espanya, s/n, 17002 Girona, with live departures, station services and facilities shown on its official Girona station page. If your ticket says Figueres-Vilafant or Barcelona Sants, it requires a different handoff altogether.

A ticket from Girona may be for high-speed, medium-distance or other services. Do not assume the same boarding checks, ticket conditions or luggage rules apply to all of them. This guide is about getting from a Costa Brava property to a Girona-station departure. The separate Girona and Figueres rail-arrival guide covers meeting passengers coming off trains.

Costa Brava to Girona station: work backward from the train

The planning sequence starts with the actual train departure and boarding instructions, then allows time to reach the right entrance and find the departure platform or control point. Only after that do you calculate the property pickup, road contingency and readiness time. A departure at a particular hour is not a promise that arrival two minutes beforehand is workable.

For a party travelling on the same booking, identify the least flexible participant: a guest using mobility assistance, a family with a stroller, or someone carrying an oversize bag. That person can set the practical handoff time. If there is a connecting flight or another nonrefundable reservation later, communicate the entire chain rather than simply saying 'train to Barcelona.'

Compare the three ways to arrange the station transfer

Private point-to-point transfer: useful when the pickup is a villa, remote coastal hotel or several travellers share substantial luggage. Confirm a single agreed address, a ready time, the correct Girona rail destination and how everyone will find the vehicle. A private car is not a substitute for required station screening.

Public transport and an onward walk or taxi: potentially appropriate for flexible travellers with light bags and accommodation near a practical bus connection. Check the whole sequence, not only the bus timetable: departure stop, terminal, walking segment and any transfer should align with the actual rail ticket.

A multi-stop chauffeur booking: useful if a departure day includes a hotel checkout, a luggage collection at a second property or a planned Girona meeting before the train. Keep the train's deadline as the controlling event and agree all stops in advance; adding a discretionary lunch does not create more time.

Luggage has two separate limits

There are two different capacity checks: the luggage that fits in the chosen vehicle and the luggage your train ticket permits. A large executive vehicle may accommodate more bags than a train fare allows. Renfe's published luggage rules distinguish regular AVE rules from more restrictive Avlo allowances, and operator conditions can change. Oversize sports equipment should be reviewed before travel, not at the rail gate.

When requesting a vehicle, give the concierge the passenger count, number and approximate dimensions of suitcases, strollers and any bikes or golf bags. If a second driver or vehicle may be needed, resolve it when quoting rather than treating an unspecified fleet class as a guarantee.

The villa-to-station handoff is the part to put in writing

Many coastal villas and historic properties use access lanes, reception desks or gates different from the address pinned by a mapping application. The transport brief should identify the vehicle-reachable meeting location, not only the property's marketing name. Determine whether luggage will be ready at street level or must be moved from a distant apartment entrance.

At the station, distinguish vehicle arrival from being ready to board. Agree the lawful unloading point that the assigned chauffeur can actually use, who accompanies children and bags into the station, and which guest holds the tickets. Never promise an exclusive curb position or vehicle access that has not been confirmed.

A six-item departure brief for your concierge

1. Train identity: operating company, exact station, date, scheduled departure and any carriage/ticket instructions.

2. Party readiness: number of guests, bags, children and accessibility needs; date-specific check-in or boarding time if given.

3. Coastal property: full address, gate/reception entrance, villa manager's contact and vehicle approach restrictions.

4. Stop plan: whether the drive is direct or includes a second pickup, luggage stop or appointment.

5. Communication: passenger's reachable mobile number and the person authorised to approve itinerary changes.

6. Station handoff: planned drop location, luggage support expectations and a fallback contact if the traffic situation changes.

When a conservative plan matters most

Build additional margin when travelling on summer departure days, when properties lie off major roads, or when your group has more luggage than it can move in one trip. A private driver can manage the itinerary and communications, but road time is not fixed and a train operator's access cutoffs remain outside the chauffeur's control.

If the train is part of a bigger Spain itinerary, our villa, hotel and resort transfer service can coordinate a direct departure from a Costa Brava property. For additional planned stops on the same day, see our private chauffeur service. These service pages explain the available arrangements; this article is the practical departure checklist rather than a price or booking catalogue.

Frequently asked questions

Is Girona railway station the same as Girona-Costa Brava Airport?

No. Girona railway station in the city and Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO) are separate facilities. Check the exact destination on the rail ticket and transport confirmation.

Can the chauffeur drive to the train platform?

No platform or restricted-zone vehicle access should be assumed. Confirm the permitted station-side unloading point and plan the remaining walk or station assistance separately.

How early should we leave from Begur or Llafranc?

There is no reliable universal pickup time. Work backward from the actual train and operator instructions, then include your property's access, luggage loading, traffic conditions and station arrival margin.

Does vehicle luggage space mean the same baggage is accepted on the train?

No. The two policies are independent. Review the train operator's current baggage terms and size restrictions before selecting equipment and vehicle.

What if we are collecting guests from two villas?

Provide both addresses, access details and ready times before quoting. The second pickup changes the itinerary and needs to fit the train deadline.
